Flour Resist / Batik Dyeing: Material Systems 2025 by Driplocked Studios®

Driplocked Studios® approaches garment construction as an ongoing research practice, shaping it’s design signature through material testing, process-led experimentation and patiently engaging with techniques that produce timeless patterns and textures.

Over time, this way of working has given our design language a clearer direction. We began looking for surface techniques where outcomes are shaped gradually, through the interaction of multiple variables over time. Methods in which material,mixture, application and duration work together, allowing unique patterns to emerge from the accumulation of each step. This exploration led us toward natural resist dyeing techniques, particularly batik.

Resist dyeing traditions have appeared across many regions for centuries, with documented practices throughout Asia, Africa, and the Middle East since as early as the eighth century. We approach these histories as points of reference. They help us understand how methods behave when applied in new contexts and how new surfaces form when established systems are reworked through contemporary practice.

It begins with a flour based compound, applied directly onto the fabric’s surface and left in a controlled state to form a continous thickened layer across the cloth. As the compound cures, internal stresses accumulate within the surface layer. A network of cracks are produced on this surface by manual fracturing, distributed unevenly all across the fabric. These fractures set the path through which, the pigment dye later flows to create a texture. 

A dye solution prepared using fabric dye, caustic soda and water is applied across the cracked resist surface. Pigment travels through the ruptures into the cloth. The treated fabric is left to dry off in sunlight and undergoes washing. Residual flour material is removed and what is left is this beautiful pattern on the cloth’s surface.
